Shifting to a Spacefaring Culture

Updated: Sep 19, 2021

Just imagine visting your grown-up children and/or grandchildren living in... the moon?!

What is space faring civilization? (spās′fâr′ĭng) adj. Engaged in the launching of vehicles into outer space or in journeying through space: a spacefaring civilization. space′far′er n.

Educational planning always needs to look towards the future. At the end of the day, isn’t that what we are preparing our children for? And regardless of how far-fetched it might sound today; it seems like the near future will involve even more people than are currently residing there. A lot more.

For well over half a century we’ve been sending unmanned vehicles and manned vehicles to visit various parts of our solar system. From Earth’s low orbit to the far reaches of the Kuiper Belt, our presence continues to expand across the vast cosmic expanse. For several decades we have been taking baby steps to possibly become a space faring civilization.

And regardless of how far-fetched it might sound today; it seems like the near future will involve even more people than are currently residing there. A lot more.

While there are many reasons for this (e.g., exploration, scientific research, tourism, industry, etc.) what should grab our attention and imagination is the vast array of opportunities this has been and will exponentially create for our children. Many of the technologies that we take for granted today are the result of our reaching towards the stars. And we are barely getting started.

Whether it’s going up there or getting others up there, the opportunities already exist and will only continue to grow. Some see this as a way to improve life on our planet by accessing more resources. Others are occupied in creating more technologies. Still others see this as a chance to make new worlds available to Humanity as it continues to grow.

Isn’t this something, that we as parents and educators should be bringing to the attention of our children? We a Froebel think so.
